Machine safety is governed by two standards: EN/ISO 13849-1 and EN/IEC 62061. Both standards are harmonized to the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, which defines the Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSR) for machinery.Although their methods for performing risk assessment are different, both standards — EN ISO 13849-1 and EN 62061 — when correctly applied, achieve the same result.

3 Under EN ISO 13849-1, the consideration of safety starts with the risks associated with the machine, its function and its operation. Machine designers are obliged to eliminate risks before considering further measures to reduce or control risks (EN ISO 12100). ISO 13849-1 is a revised version of EN 954-1. The complex mathematical formulas of the system reliability theory were replaced with pre-calculated tables. Some concepts of EN 954 were retained, i.e. categories, redundancy, monitoring. A number were modified, i.e. risk graph, selection of Categories.
